Member Achievements – June 2015

Ashley-Buchanan-StudioAshley Buchanan  was a finalist in the 2015 Emerging Voices Awards presented by the American Craft Council. She combines old-school handwork with modern technology, such as powder-coating and digital photography.

Seliena CoyleSeliena Coyle received the Golden Fleece Award for 2015. The Award is an independent artistic prize fund established as a charitable bequest by the late Helen Lillias Mitchell. Coyle will use the Award to undertake an extended period of personal research and development towards a body of new work. It also helped her to attend the 2015 SNAG conference in Boston from Ireland.

Elizabeth GoluchElizabeth Goluch is the focus of a short documentary film “Lady Bug,” released by the Craft Alliance and the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council. It is the fifth in a series of films about some of Nova Scotia’s master craftspeople. Goluch’s metal insect sculptures can take months to research and fabricate. Using gold, silver, gemstones, and various other materials, she incorporates aspects of an insect’s life into each sculpture’s design.

DrMekahGordonDr. Mekah Gordon was Art Jewelry’s March 2015 Monthly Design Challenge Winner for her “Air Dancer” pendant/brooch. She created this lost wax casting in sterling silver for one of her former high school art students, who became a noted dancer in New York.

Kaminer HaislipKaminer Haislip announced her collaboration with actress Reese Witherspoon’s new Southern inspired lifestyle company Draper James. They commissioned her sterling silver Magnolia Bowl for their new online shop. Haislip and the Magnolia Bowl were also included in an article on Draper James in the magazine Women’s Wear Daily.

Jera Rose Petal LodgeJera Rose Petal Lodge was featured on “Arts InSight,” a weekly arts program on Houston Public Media. The show’s camera crew set up at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) to film and interview Lodge about her innovative jewelry and metal work. Lodge is a former resident artist of HCCC.

Jaydan-MooreJaydan Moore was named the 2015 Emerging Artist by the American Craft Council as part of its Emerging Voices Award. Moore’s work ranges from intricately reconstructed platters to prints of their surfaces. The newly established Award is being presented in 2015 and biennially thereafter in recognition and support of the next generation of makers and thinkers in the field of contemporary craft.

Large vessel with Damascene lid. collection by Korean 1987Komelia Hongja Okim has received her third Fulbright research grant. She will write on Korean Metal Surface Techniques. She will be collecting resources in many parts of the country through museums, crafts centers and antique shops. Her book will cover the techniques, historical backgrounds, and contemporary usages in university teachings and with crafts artisans and fine artists in the metal fields.

One of Claudio Pino’s rings was selected for the 2015 Taiwan International Metal Crafts Competition. It is being exhibited at the Gold Museum of Taiwan in Taipei through September 13.

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft’s incoming resident artists include Terry Fromm and Younha Jung. With over 80 applications from 22 states and three countries outside the U.S., the 2015-2016 residents represent some of the top craft artists in the field.

Member Achievements – April 2014


Kristin DienerKristin Diener’s “Eyeball Pendant” is featured on the cover of the book On Body and Soul: Contemporary Armor to Amulets by Suzanne Ramljak. The exhibition Protective Ornament, in conjunction with the book, opens in May at The Metal Museum in Memphis, TN.

John DoddsJohn Dodds, an Alamosa, CO artist and high school art teacher, was recently acclaimed in Metalsmith for his anti-trophy artwork. An article related to this was published in the Valley Courier newspaper in Alamosa.

Kaminer HaislipKaminer Haislip is receiving the Samuel Gaillard Stoney Conservation Craftsmanship Award on Historic Charleston Foundation Charter Day. Haislip is a contemporary silversmith located in downtown Charleston, SC.

Member Achievements – March 2014


Bayless_HangingNestHeather Bayless’ piece Hanging Nest was accepted to the Craft Forms 2013 exhibition and also received a Juror’s Award.

Harriete Berman received first place in the Repurposed Materials in Art & Design category of the 2014 Eco Awards. Her project, Pick Up Your Pencils, Begin, is composed of thousands of #2 pencils that form an ephemeral curtain. The installation emphasizes material reuse, student education, math, science, and diversity.

Parker BrownParker Brown is the winner of the 2014 SNAG/crafthaus Conference scholarship. Brown is a modern-day armor maker. Not only does he meticulously research the historical costumes, swords, and helmets he recreates, he also documents all his processes and shares them via video documentation and a book project he is about to start. The scholarship is awarded every January to a crafthaus member and is intended to enable his/her attendance at the annual SNAG conference.

Luana_CoonenLuana Coonen has moved from Hawaii to San Francisco. In February, the Hui No’eau’s The World of Monet: The Artist’s Garden gala event featured Coonen’s Asymmetrical Teardrops.

Robyn Dufty was awarded First Place in the Phenomenal Gemstones category of the 2014 AGTA Cutting Edge Awards. The entry was a cabochon-cut opal titled Aurora Borealis in the Night Sky.

WendyMcAllister_AtollWendy McAllister exhibited her newest one-off enameled brooches at the SIERAAD International Jewellery Art Fair in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in November.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAClaudio Pino’s rings are worn by Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” movie. Pino is known for his sculptural rings that showcase colored gemstones in mixed metal with mechanical moving parts. Read more>>>

Mensa_RoseRebecca Rose’s work is featured in the American Mensa Bulletin.

Stephen_YuskoStephen Yusko is the subject of the article “Industrial Strength” in the December/January American Craft magazine. Yusko works with forged and fabricated steel.

Todd Reed is included in MJSA Journal’s December article “Fashion Forecast: Key Jewelry Trends That Will Shape 2014.” Belle Brooke Barer is in the same issue, as part of the “2014 Trends Watch: Silver is Here to Stay.”

Boris Bally and Harriete Estel Berman are among the semi-finalists of the 2013 Eco Arts Awards in the Repurposed Materials in Arts and Design category.

AmandaPacker_RecollectAmanda Packer has been awarded the Lydon Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) Award by the Society for Contemporary Craft. The LEAP Award honors exceptional emerging talent in the contemporary craft field. Packer, who recently received her MFA in Jewelry and Metals from San Diego State University, explores memory, nostalgia, and the power of objects in her work. Other finalists include Ashley Buchanan, Tara Locklear, and Laura Wood.

The MJSA Education Foundation recently awarded scholarships to students pursuing degrees related to jewelry making and design. Two of the recipients are SNAG members. Melis Agabigum of Ann Arbor, Michigan, who received a $2,450 scholarship, is working toward her MFA in Metalsmithing/Jewelry and Intermedia (integrated/mixed mediums and installation) at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. William Yang, who also received a $2,450 scholarship, is completing a BFA in Jewelry at the Pratt Institute in New York City.

Member Achievements – October 2013

KroizShana Kroiz has been working on new pieces of her sensuous jewelry and will be at the American Fine Craft Show NYC, Facets in Baltimore, One of a Kind Show and Sale Chicago, and American Fine Craft Show Brooklyn.

Jillian_MooreJillian Moore will be returning to Amsterdam for the international jewellery art fair SIERAAD with nine other American jewelry makers. They will make up the largest single group of Americans at the fair, all participating for the first time excluding Moore. The organizer of SIERAAD, Astrid Berens, has been working to help promote this year’s influx of Americans with the additional post-fair event “American Monday.” This is a first for SIERAAD, and it will help further showcase the work of ten Americans, five from Moore’s group as well as five others, to the jewelry community of Amsterdam through a series of lectures and demonstrations.

Pajak-ReynoldsMichelle Pajak-Reynolds’ haute couture jewelry has been featured on Entrenous by Le Noeud. Entrenous is a website that features a love for art and design and aims to bring artists and designers closer to you.

Claudio_PinoClaudio Pino has announced that The Museum of Decorative Arts of Santiago, Chile is presenting a few of his one-of-a-kind rings during the contemporary jewelry exhibition Delirio y Cordura. Pino’s work will also be at Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h in Montreal, Canada; the collective exhibition of 14 jewelers in Quebec will present his new trilogy, which was designed with the theme of transparency, as well as his Collection made in Platinum.
